FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Summary:
The International Marriage Broker Regulation Act of 2003 is again in the news with sponsors spotted using incorrect information endorsing the new law. The legislation was originally sponsored by Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Rick Larsen, both Democrats, and attracted several co-sponsors. Democratic Representative Jan Schakowsky, one of the co-sponsors, is accused of using phony facts on her official
www.state.gov website promoting much disputed legislation.
05
May 2004, Gold Coast, Australia -- Democratic
Representative Jan Schakowsky, one of the co-sponsors of The
International Marriage Broker Regulation Act of 2003, is using incorrect
information in the article on her official www.state.gov
website endorsing the new law. Requests to remove bogus particulars from
the Internet are ignored, which raises questions in validity of the law
that needs phony facts to prove it right. Elena
Petrova was dumbfounded
to find herself pictured as the
organizer of an opposition to the U.S. law on International Marriage
Brokers. She is
an Australian resident, which makes her immune to the proposed
legislation. Petrova
has been sending requests to remove oblivious accusations from the
Internet since March 2004, to no avail. The article in question, located
at: http://www.house.gov/schakowsky/article_1_07_04_marriage_trap.html,
is still online as today 05 May 2004. Elena
is the firm supporter of the idea of better protection for
women-immigrants but she says the proposed legislation will not serve
its advertised purpose and may even be harmful. Petrova
released her own list of measures that would remove any possibility for
a foreign wife to be subjected to spousal abuse. Those issues include
the following:
Petrova
proposes a detailed plan on how those issues should be taken care of and
why they are essential to reducing the number of spousal abuse claims
from foreign wives. She says that the current immigration system
promotes false abuse claims, which is the main reason why the number of
such claims increased for the past years, and proves it by statistical
evidence. Petrova also condemns views of
international matchmakers as guilty of trafficking in women and
promoting sexual slavery. She says, the number of international
marriages will continue to increase in the years to come, and portraying
the international matchmaking industry as evil appears peculiar for any
open-minded person. The complete statement of Elena Petrova in
response to the article "Marriage Trap" authored by Nancy Traver
from Chicago Tribune and published on the website of the U.S.
Representative Jan Schakowsky can be found at: http://www.womenrussia.com/press/28_04_2004_disclaimer.htm
The
International Marriage Broker Regulation Act of 2003 was originally sponsored
by Senator Maria Cantwell and Rep. Rick Larsen, both Democrats, and
introduced in Senate of the USA 25 July 2003. The Bill has gained
several co-sponsors from the House Democratic Team but was severely
criticized by the insiders from the international matchmaking industry. Elena
Petrova is well known in the Russian dating industry by her website
Russian Brides Cyber Guide (http://www.womenrussia.com),
which was
founded in 1999 and became the first website about Russian women
designed by a Russian woman. In
March 2004 Elena started a campaign to
promote a new image of Russian women seeking marriage abroad, supported
by a number of other Russian women-website owners: in opposition to the
current image of Russian women seeking partners abroad portrayed as
submissive, serving and sacrificing, Russian Brides Cyber Guide offers
the image of Russian women as intelligent, educated and smart, who seek
suitable partners and not immigration by any means. |
