How do you do, Miss Petrova?

Now I have learned a good deal of experience by associating with my Margherita. Her special affair is that she is living in a military town, Severomorsk 20 km north of Murmansk. Living in such a town entails some problems and possibilities.

1. Such towns are strictly off-limits to all Russians not having their job there, and certainly to every one non-national not specially invited. The home-visit marriage agencies recommend to make sure she is who she is saying she is, is almost totally and for ever impossible. You will have to rely on "flower delivery test", possibly a detective agency if you can find one who have an agent with the right "propiska", and on top of it your good antennae for relationships.

This is not an insignificant problem because there are many such towns around in Russia, like Severodvinsk close to Arkhangelsk and Chelyabinsk where parts of the city is restricted. I know that more than once this restriction has been handy for dishonest women.

2. Due to an ongoing restructuring of the Russian military, most markedly of the Navy, life in these "secret towns" is not so good as it used to be. Unemployment is now rampant, alcoholism is endemic and divorces are abounding. Houses are often dilapidated, materiel decaying and on the whole everything that is problematic in Russia is even more so in such towns. It is a highly controlled life, "propiska" check ever time you go to e.g. Murmansk, much of the town strictly reserved for those with a job to do only, telephones in and out will probably be listened to and e-mailings in and out will probably be read by someone with a pledge to silence. Many people want to move away from there if they can find something better, as to Severomorsk I have on the net found 12 ladies presenting themselves on agencies, not including those who are at agencies that don't show resident towns and those who answer to gentlemen's ads like my Margherita did. 12 ladies out of a population of about, say, 10.000 looking for international romance, that is quite a lot.

3. Life in such a garrison town entails some privilegia too. Concerning the matrimonial industry it is important that they are allowed cheap telephone lines and sponsored computers in return for almost never being allowed any home visit. So a gentleman corresponding with a lady from a "forbidden town" can expect the correspondence to run more fluid than with other ladies not with the same privilegia - if only he can accept that their confidential correspondence is probably not 100% confidential.
